Theatres
Białystok is a town of many cultural and artistic institutions, associations and organisations, caring about the development of the cultural life in the city.
The Białystok Puppet Theatre (ul. Kalinowskiego 1, tel + 48 85 742 50 31) is famous for its excellent performances, applauded domestically and abroad. The theatre has several stages, including one for adults and one for children. After the play the audience and artists can meet in the popular Kawiarnia Lalek (Puppet Cafe) located in the same building as the Theatre.
The City Theatre, presently called the
Aleksander Węgierko Drama Theatre, built in 1938 (ul. Elektryczna 2, tel + 48 85 741 59 90) has two stages - the Small and the Big Stage. The theatre repertoire consists of classical drama and modern works of Polish and foreign authors. The building of the Theatre hosts the "Antrakt" cafe.
The School Theatre of the Białystok branch of the Warsaw Theatre Academy (ul. Sienkiewicza 14, tel + 48 85 743 53 53) is a dynamically developing stage, presenting mainly the successful, sometimes experimental performances prepared by the graduating students, as well as the best productions directed by the lecturers of the school. The theatre also hosts young companies from other parts of Poland and abroad.
The Klaps Amateur Theatre is operated by the Youth Cultural Centre (ul. Warszawska 79A) and is already a well acclaimed company, having won a number of awards at national theatre festivals. Just as active is the PRO Youth Theatre, whose opening nights always attract crowds at the Voivodeshoip Centre of Culture Animation at ul. Kilińskiego 8.
An important event in the city's cultural life are the
Festivals of Contemporary Art, organised every year in May. One of their characteristic and constant elements are the performances of street theatres, usually held in the courtyard of the Branicki Palace.
