Today
After the war, Białystok again became a voivodeship capital, a scientific, economic and cultural
centre of the whole north-eastern region of Poland. On 1 January 1999 - following the national administrative reform programme coming into effect - the old town of the Branicki family became the capital of the newly established
Podlaskie voivodeship, previously of Bialystok Voivodship (1921-1998).
Today Białystok is the largest city (pop. 291 300 in 2004) in north-eastern Poland.
