Uniquely Podlasie
Picturesquely situated region of the north-east Poland comprises all: lake lands, marshy terrains and low-lying plains. It is only here - in the
Białowieża Forest (inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List) where you can watch freely living European bisons. It is also a
cultural and religious mosaic of Poland and pilgrimage centre of all Orthodox believers. The cultural diversity is also maintained among Muslims - the descendants of Tatars, who settled down in Poland during the reign of John III Sobieski; the localities inhabited by them have great cultural values. Some of the countless attractions of the region include the Sanctuary nearby the Wigry Lake, the Branicki Palace in Białystok (dubbed "The Polish Versailles") and monuments of Augustów. During travelling across Podlasie, it is easy to see the output of influences from Lithuania, Belarus or even Ukraine which has an impact on folklore and customs of local people, however the unconsciousness of this plurality should encourage everyone to get to know it better.
