Białystok - Capital of Podlasie
Białystok with its 300 000 inhabitants is
the largest town in north-east Poland. Its role is that of an administrative, economic and scientific capital of the region. It is the seat of 15 higher education institiutions training students in various specialties.
The other major towns of the region are:
Łomża, around 66 thousand inhabitants, an important centre for trade and agricultural product processing industry.
Suwałki, around 70 thousand inhabitants. The Suwalki Special Economic Zone established there offers investment relief, which creates favourable conditions for the development of private enterprises.
The city has become the base from which visitors set off to other parts of the wide area of The Green Lungs of Poland - to the forests of Białowieska Wilderness, to the swamps of the Biebrza River, to the charming old towns and villages and other sites of the Podlasie region.
