Science and education in Białystok
Białystok is an inter-regional
academic and scientific centre. A dozen of university-level schools teach the student population that numbers 50.000. The oldest staterun institutions of higher education include:
The Białystok Medical University (
Akademia Medyczna),
The Białystok Technical University (
Politechnika Białostocka), and the
University of Białystok. Nonstate universities comprise such schools as
The Białystok Higher School of Public Administration – a prizewinner of the "Rzeczpospolita" national daily 2005 poll to choose Polish best undergraduate university,
The Białystok University of Finance and Management,
Higher School of Economics and Higher School of Mathematics and Applied Computer Sciences. Białystok’s oldest university is the
Archdiocese Seminary, established after World War II and continuing the academic tradition of the
Theology Department of the Stefan Batory University in Vilnius ever since.
Higher arts education offered in Białystok is provided here by local branches of Warsaw universities. Future actors and directors study at the
Faculty of Puppet Theatre Art of the Aleksander Zelwerowicz Theatre Academy in Warsaw, seated in Białystok. The Faculty runs the School Theatre staging the students’ graduation works and productions by the Faculty’s teaching staff.
The Białystok Branch of the Frederic Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw, along with its teaching activity, organizes concerts that feature and host the rising stars of classical music as well as the professors of higher arts education institutions.
